Fire retardant

Environmentally friendly fire retardants, such as Burnblock, bio-based phosphorus additives, and mineral-based options, are sustainable, non-toxic, and biodegradable alternatives to halogenated compounds. These alternatives, often derived from natural sources like plants, minerals, or waste materials (e.g., lignin, chitosan), offer effective fire resistance without producing toxic emissions or bioaccumulating in the environment.

Top Environmentally Friendly Fire Retardant Types

• Bio-based Compounds: Derived from natural sources, these include lignin, tannins, chitosan (from shellfish), phytic acid, and starch.

Natural Minerals: Mineral-based flame retardants, such as Magnesium Hydroxide and Aluminum Trihydrate (ATH), act by releasing water vapor when heated to cool and suppress flames.

Phosphorus & Nitrogen-Based Systems: These compounds encourage char formation on the surface of materials, creating a protective barrier that prevents further burning and reduces smoke.

Natural Fibers: Materials like wool and silk are naturally resistant to ignition.

Engineered Solutions: Products like Burnblock are 100% natural, pH-neutral, and non-toxic, designed for treating wood and natural fibers.

Key Benefits of Eco-Friendly Retardants

• Non-toxic & Non-halogenated: Free from harmful substances like Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs).

Biodegradable: Many options decompose naturally without harming ecosystems.

Low VOC Emissions: They contribute to better indoor air quality.

Safe for Application: Often safe for direct application on wood, fabrics, and for use in construction.

Applications

These sustainable retardants are used in construction materials (wood and insulation), textiles, electronics, automotive components, and as protective coatings for materials.
