TRADITIONAL 

Garbage incinerators (waste-to-energy plants) burn waste to produce electricity but release hazardous air pollutants, including dioxins, mercury, heavy metals, acid gases, and particulate matter. While marketed as a waste management solution, incinerators emit more CO2 per kilowatt-hour than coal power plants. They are often considered major sources of environmental injustice and pollution, contributing to poor air quality and respiratory illnesses in surrounding areas. 

Key Pollution and Environmental Impacts:

• Air Pollution: Incineration releases toxic substances such as dioxins and "forever chemicals," which are often not fully captured by filtration systems.

Toxic Ash: The combustion process creates hazardous fly ash that must be sent to specialized landfills.

Carbon Intensity: Incinerators emit high levels of , creating roughly 10–20 times more carbon per kilowatt-hour than average electrical grids in some regions.

Environmental Injustice: Incinerators are frequently located near disadvantaged communities, causing localized toxic contamination and health concerns.

Not a Green Solution: Critics argue that "waste-to-energy" is greenwashing that discourages waste reduction and recycling efforts, prioritizing "feeding" the plant over sustainable waste management. Toronto

Operational Mechanism:

Combustion: Waste is burned at high temperatures (over 1,500°F) in a furnace, turning water into steam.

Energy Generation: High-pressure steam spins turbines to generate electricity for the power grid.

Pollution Control: Filtration systems try to neutralize acid gases and trap particulates, but cannot eliminate all toxic emissions. 

Despite advanced filtration systems, incineration contributes to atmospheric pollution, making it a contentious energy source compared to truly renewable alternatives.
